Our story

Born of the bush, built for travellers.

We are a Tanzanian camping and car-hire company with one purpose: to share the wild places we grew up alongside, the right way.

Who we are

Tanzania is not a destination to us. It's home.

We are Wilderness Africa was founded in Arusha and Moshi — the twin gateways to Tanzania's northern safari circuit and the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. We grew up with the Serengeti on our doorstep and the Ngorongoro Crater as a backyard.

Today we welcome travellers from Europe, Asia and the Americas who want more than a packaged tour. Whether you're tracking the Great Migration, sleeping under canvas in the Ndutu plains, or simply hiring a trusted 4x4, we bring the same thing to every trip: genuine local knowledge, honest pricing, and a deep respect for the land and the people who protect it.

The people behind the wheel

Guides who read the wild like a story.

Our driver-guides are the soul of every safari. Each is licensed, professionally trained and fluent in English — and every one carries a lifetime of knowledge about wildlife behaviour, the parks, and the delicate ecosystems you'll travel through.

They know where the lions rest at midday, when the wildebeest will brave the Mara River, and which acacia hides a leopard at dusk. More than drivers, they're storytellers, naturalists and the reason our guests return.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask us.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round destination. June to October offers the best general wildlife viewing as animals gather around water, while December to March is superb for the Ndutu calving season. We'll match your dates to the experiences you most want to see.

Do I need a visa and vaccinations?

Most visitors need a visa, available online or on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). A yellow fever certificate may be required if you're arriving from a risk country, and malaria prophylaxis is recommended. We'll send full guidance with your itinerary.

Are your safaris private or shared?

Every safari we run is fully private. Your vehicle, your guide and your itinerary are exclusively yours — we never seat strangers alongside you. You set the pace and we make it happen.

What currency should I bring?

The Tanzanian Shilling is the local currency, but US Dollars are widely accepted — bring newer notes printed after 2009. Most lodges and camps also accept major cards. Tips for guides and camp staff are best carried in cash.
